FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood?

I know that Brotherhood is an alternate retelling, but the original anime and the manga are the same up to about the halfway point right? So in brotherhood did they completely remake and reanimate the entire first half of the series or did they just reuse the old episodes?If they did remake it did they change any of the story in the first half?
